Mightyena
Mightyena [NU] 262
(Strategy written by PoisonX)

Abilities:
Intimidate
Quick Feet
Moxie

Stats:

HP: 70
Atk: 90
Def: 70
SpA: 60
SpD: 60
Spe: 70

Total: 420

Placed Tier: (NU)
Tiers In Which Usability Is Covered In This Analysis: (NU)

Type: Dark

Mightyena was sadly ignored by almost all competitive players during Generations 3 and 4, but now Mightyena has finally gotten an ability to give it a niche in NU, Moxie. Moxie increases the attack of Mightyena by one stage every time he kills an opponent. Also Mightyena has good coverage with STAB Crunch and STAB Sucker Punch, along with the elemental fangs and Return. However, without Moxie boosts and / or help with speed, Mightyena is out-sped by several key pokemon. Along with this, Mightyena is frail and doesn't have a single stat that goes over 90. However Mightyena has two other good abilities, Intimidate and Quick Feet that shouldn't be overlooked, as they are useful. All in all, Mightyena is a difficult pokemon to use, but the rewards are great and the satisfaction is greater.

NU Set #1: (Choice Scarf)

Item: Choice Scarf
Ability: Moxie
EVs: 4 HP, 252 Atk, 252 Speed
Nature: Jolly ( + Speed, - Special Attack )

Moveset:
  • Crunch
  • Ice Fang / Return
  • Fire Fang / Return
  • Thunder Fang / Return

Set Explanation:

Pretty simple really, just switch Mightyena in on something with low HP or low defenses and finish it off with one of your moves. Moxie will continue to accumulate attack boosts and possibly put Mightyena on a sweep, however it is used best as a late game sweeper due to the fact that it has rather nice coverage. Careful not to reveal this too early in the game though, as many pokemon can easily wall it. Crunch is a nice and strong STAB move while the elemental fangs all together have ridiculously good coverage. Alternatively, if a member of your team has the coverage down, you could swap out an elemental fang for Return for a strong normal type move which has decent coverage with Dark type.

NU Set #2: (Counter)

Item: Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 220 HP, 80 Atk, 192 Def, 18 SpD
Nature: Impish ( + Defense, - Special Attack )

Moveset:
  • Counter
  • Protect / Sucker Punch / Roar
  • Crunch
  • Substitute / Roar

Set Explanation:

One of the more complicated Mightyena sets to use, effectively assuring a KO on a pokemon bar fighting types and extremely bulky types. It's simple, switch in on a physical pokemon and let intimidate lower its attack a stage. Then proceed to use the move best suited for it. If you know the opponent is going to switch, use substitute, then use either crunch or counter depending on the situation. If you know they are going to stay in, your EVs + Intimidate should let you tank a couple physical attacks from that pokemon, you can then fire back with counter which will hit that pokemon way harder. The choice between Protect / Sucker Punch is really situational, Protect can be used for scouting, while Sucker Punch can be used for finishing off or decently damaging pokemon that will out-speed Mightyena to the point where he will be KO'd or when his HP is too low to set up a Sub. You can also use Roar instead of Protect or Sucker Punch for shuffling with Entry Hazard support. You could also run protect and roar with crunch and counter for a more specific moveset.

NU Set #3: (Quick Feet)

Item: Toxic Orb
Ability: Quick Feet
EVs: 4 HP, 252 Atk, 252 Speed
Nature: Adamant ( + Attack, - Special Attack ), or Jolly ( - Special Attack, + Speed )

Moveset:
  • Crunch
  • Protect / Substitute
  • Sucker Punch
  • Facade

Set Explanation:

This set is basically hit and run. Switch in Mightyena and either Protect or finish something off with Sucker Punch to activate Toxic Orb, sending Mightyena's speed to pretty fast levels. Crunch is for reliable and powerful STAB, Facade is a good 140 BP Normal move with Toxic Orb activated, which will definitely put a chunk in anything that doesn't resist it and has decent coverage with Crunch and Sucker Punch. The reason none of the elemental fangs are listed as options is because of the fact that the other moves simply do more damage. Alternatively, you could use substitute as an alternative, but protect is generally the better option due to the fact that with Substitute you have to rely on either the opponent switching out or Mightyena out-speeding the opponent, which is rather hard since it has base 70 speed. Jolly can remedy occasionally being out-sped, but it sacrifices precious attacking power which Mightyena needs.

Counters to Mightyena (NU):

Counters: Priority fighting will quickly put an end to Mightyena's scarf boosted sweeps, Gurdurr and Monferno have access to Mach Punch and Vacuum Wave respectively and will end a sweep, especially Gurdurr due to its evolite upped bulk. Monferno can't take a + 1 boosted Return, and Gurdurr should be careful on Return with any boosts above + 2. Any pokemon with good physical bulk that resists or is neutral to Crunch / Sucker Punch is a good check against Mightyena. Quagsire and Torkoal stop Mightyena cold in its tracks, being able to ignore Moxie boosts with Unaware and tank a hit then incapacitate Mightyena with a burn respectively. Amolomola is also a good counter, but must be weary of switching into a possible thunder fang that could paralyze it and deal super effective damage. Regirock laughs at all of Mightyena's moves except the Counter set. Tangela, Miltank and Lickilicky are more good counters, however Tangela must be wary of Ice Fang. Also, Scarfed pokemon that are faster than the Scarfed Moxie set can come in and proceed to OHKO with a powerful attack as Mightyena doesn't have Intimidate on that set to reduce physical attack damage. It should be noted that while not common, Mawile can come in with Intimidate, reduce Mightyena's attack and proceed to wall all sets that don't care Fire Fang. Carracosta can also wall Mightyena if Mightyena isn't carrying Thunder Fang. Probopass is one of the best counters, laughing at all of Mightyena's attacks, which would allow time for Probopass to set up on Mightyena if the person wielding Mightyena decides not to switch him out. Throh and Sudowoodo can also come in on any of Mightyena's attacks and force it out or take it down, although Sudowoodo must be wary of a STAB boosted Crunch or Sucker Punch. Relicanth and Torterra are also notable checks but must be wary of Thunder Fang and Ice Fang respectively.
